Ángel Abbud-Madrid

Angel Abbud-Madrid is a globally recognized leader in space resources and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). As the Director of the Center for Space Resources at the Colorado School of Mines, he spearheads a pioneering research program focused on the human and robotic exploration of space and the sustainable use of extraterrestrial resources. He also directs the world’s first Space Resources Graduate Program, training the next generation of scientists, engineers, and policymakers in this emerging field.

With over 30 years of experience, Abbud-Madrid has conducted groundbreaking experiments in NASA’s low-gravity facilities, including drop towers, parabolic-flight aircraft, the Space Shuttle, and the International Space Station, earning him the NASA Astronauts’ Personal Achievement Award for his contributions to human spaceflight. He currently serves as President of the Space Resources Roundtable, an international organization advancing the study and application of lunar, asteroidal, and planetary resources, which he has helped organize since its inception.

Abbud-Madrid holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder, a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University, and undergraduate degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM). His expertise bridges terrestrial resource development with space exploration, making him a key figure in shaping the future of an environmental economy that spans Earth and beyond.

As an organizer of Resources LUNARIS 2025, Abbud-Madrid brings his extensive experience and vision to this historic seminar, driving the establishment of a South American space agency and fostering a technological and cultural bridge between the northern and southern hemispheres of the Americas.
